FAHS Ethics Approval Research Proposal Checklist

This checklist is designed as a prompt to help insure that all the relevant issues have been thought about and included in a research proposal whether or not an ethical opinion is being sought from FAHS EC.

Working title
Has the proposal got a sensible working title that accurately describes the topic of the research?

Brief summary of research aims and objectives
Is there an adequately summary that describes the research aims, specifies the objectives and formulates the research questions

Conceptual basis
Has the research made reference to analytic, conceptual constructs? Is there a theoretical underpinning to the proposal? Has the student linked into the appropriate research literature?

Specification of methods of analysis
Is the method of analysis appropriate to address the research question? Are the methods of analysis epistemologically consistent?

Viable estimate of number of respondents
Given the research question(s) and proposed form of analysis has the student estimated an appropriate number of respondents to contact? Has a power analysis been conducted? Have drop out rates been considered?

Letter granting permission to access respondents/case file data/secondary sources
If appropriate has the student made arrangements to obtain a letter authorising access to participants or data sources?

Informed consent sheet
Is there an adequate detail and appropriate information on a consent sheet? Is this written on University letterheaded paper?

Information sheet
Does this adequately describe the proposed research? Does it indicate any foreseeable risks? Is there appropriate information given to mitigate any foreseeable risks?

Foreseeable risks to students
Have these been anticipated and if necessary mitigated?

Foreseeable risks to participants
Have these been anticipated and if necessary mitigated?

Foreseeable risks to organisation
Have these been anticipated and if necessary mitigated?

Anonymity issues
Have these been dealt with adequately?

Confidentiality issues
Have these been dealt with adequately?

Security of data
Have appropriate safeguards been undertaken to secure data? e.g. keeping in locked filing cabinets, separating identity codes from data, destruction of data once analysis completed
