Departments and Divisions
- The Division of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering undertakes research in three multidisciplinary centres by building partnerships with Industry and other stakeholders. Alongside our research the division is proud to teach a variety of programmes almost all of which are accredited by at least one of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation or the Institution of Highway Incorporated Engineers, our Centre for Environmental Strategy MSc's are accredited by IEMA, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.
- The Department of Computing has an international reputation for research and teaching. We are recognised for our high quality teaching, support, organisation, resources and development in the National Student Survey, with an overall 95% student satisfaction. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise 50% of its research was rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
- The Department of Electronic Engineering is one of the largest departments in the University. The excellence of our research us recognised by the prestigious prizes we continue to receive from both industry and government bodies and our teaching was awarded 23 out of 24 in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment.
- The Department of Mathematics has widely recognised research groups in nonlinear mathematics and statistics and runs a lively PhD programme. It offers a range of undergraduate BSc and MMath courses in Mathematics in an environment where teaching and research are well integrated.
- The Division of Mechanical, Medical, and Aerospace Engineering is home to 25 academic staff and around 450 students at all levels from undergraduate through to PhD. Alongside our teaching activities, the division has a considerable range of research interests in fluid dynamics, materials & structures, biomedical engineering, robotics, structural integrity and vehicle engineering.
- The Department of Physics is a friendly medium-sized department with approximately 200 students studying for MPhys and BSc degrees, as well 60 taking our focused, vocational MSc's, and 75 PhD students. These are taught by 24 academics. It is almost unique amongst UK physics departments in offering all MPhys and BSc students a year in either industry or an internationally leading research lab. The Department has a strong reputation in research; in the latest Research Assessment Exercise, 55% of its research was rated as world leading or internationally excellent.
