Prof Steven Warburton from Technology Enhanced Learning will speak about the way that new technologies are disruptive to traditional HE models of education and how Massive Open Online Courses (e.g. Delivered via Coursera, Edx, Canvas, Udacity) are potentially going to take all of our students away from us.

Dr Julia Percival from Chemistry will speak about a project undertaken to study the use of concept mapping in the teaching of physical chemistry to year 1 undergraduate chemists and biochemists.  Two strategies were employed, firstly teaching the main content using PowerPoint slides and presenting “summing up” sessions using concept maps and the second teaching the main content using concept maps in place of PowerPoint slides in addition to the summing up maps.  An improvement in performance was noted in those students exposed to the first method and many lessons were learnt about how to design and implement concept mapping as a teaching tool for physical sciences.
