Angela Druckman appointed to the Advisory Board of ICARB - The Initiative for Carbon Accounting

Dr Angela Druckman, Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) at the University of Surrey has been appointed to the Advisory Board of ICARB - The Initiative for Carbon Accounting. ICARB is a group of academics, policy makers and professionals working to create a set of transparent, consistent and accurate rules for carbon accounting. Shujun Li awarded ISO/IEC Certificate of Appreciation

Dr Shujun Li was recently awarded an ISO/IEC Certificate of Appreciation for his contributions as the lead editor of ISO/IEC 23001-4:2011 "Information technology – MPEG systems technologies – Part 4: Codec configuration representation", the second edition of the MPEG RVC standard. The RVC standard defines a new video coding framework developed by the MPEG and its first edition was published by ISO/IEC in 2009. RVC was originally designed for developing video codecs, but its applications have been extended to graphics, images, audio and even cryptosystems.

Alan Woodward starts The Conversation

Alan Woodward, a security expert and a visiting professor of the Department, has written an article on phone hacking for The Conversation, a new independent source of online news written by the academic and research community, launched on May 16 2013. Alan's article, featured on the front of The Conversation on 17 May 2013, examines issues of privacy and security in relation to mobile devices. The University of Surrey has signed up as a founding partner to The Conversation for an initial six months alongside twelve top Universities. The aim of The Conversation is for better understanding of current affairs and complex issues. The website will provide a useful way for academics to become part of public debate and give an authoritative source of news on the Higher Education sector. Prof Kay Chen Tan to give an IEEE CIS Distinguished Lecture at Surrey
