Congratulations to Alex Samuels

Monday 28 September 2009

Congratulations to Alex Samuels, one of our graduates this year, on reaching the finals for the 2009 SET (Science Engineering & Technology) awards.

Alex was one of three finalists for the Morgan Crucible Award for ‘Best UK Student in Materials Science’; nomination was based on his final year project supervised by Dr David Carey. Alex and David attended last night’s awards ceremony in London and although Alex was not the ultimate winner, he is to be congratulated on reaching the finals for this highly prestigious award.

David Carey says the following about the project: “Alex’ project was an investigation into the uses of a new form of carbon called graphene which although only isolated in 2004 has already being hailed as one of the major recent discoveries in nanotechnology. For example it has been reported that graphene can detect individual gas molecules and Alex’s project explored the graphene – molecule interaction for carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ammonia molecules.”

This is the second time in three years that one of our graduating BEng students has made it to the final three. In 2007 Thomas Connolly (also supervised by David) won the best student award for his project on carbon nanotube composites.

Well done Alex and best wishes with the continuation of your studies as a PhD student in the ATI.
