Professor Ravi Silva, Director of the Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey, tells Alok Jha about his Clifford Patterson Lecture at the Royal Society, in which he heralds the dawn of a new carbon age - "the fifth industrial revolution".

Professor Silva believes that new carbon-based materials can be created through nanotechnology that will open up new vistas in medicine and electronics.
