Dr Katrina Charles, Lecturer in Environmental Engineering at the Centre for Environmental Strategy has recently published a paper in the Journal of Water and Health: "Commentary on community-led total sanitation and human rights: Should the right to community-wide health be won at the cost of individual rights?"


Postdoctoral Research Fellow post


We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work on a environmental modelling research project recently funded by NERC under the Changing Water Cycle Programme. This project will focus on the development and application of integrated approach to model the physical and natural processes within the urban water environment to understand the processes controlling the fate of pollutants in downstream river reaches that originate from upstream urban sources.


The Queen awards prestigious Regius Professorship to Surrey

The UK Government has announced that Electronic Engineering at the University of Surrey is among twelve outstanding university departments to have the prestigious title of Regius Professor bestowed upon it by The Queen to mark the Diamond Jubilee.


Astronomers find that young star cluster is surrounded by a halo of "sibling" stars

Stars tend to form in groups and over time the majority of these groups disperse to become field stars, like our sun. Understanding this process of cluster dissolution is important in unravelling how the Milky Way grew over time. It is a challenging task, however, because it is extremely difficult to identify the dispersed clusters.


Alan Woodward commented for SC Magazine on privay and data protection

Alan Woodward, a cyber security expert and a visiting professor of the Department, commented for the SC Magazine on how small business handles sensitive data of customers and how the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) does its work in raising the awareness of small business on regulations of the Data Protection Act. He feels most small businesses have problems understanding the importance of data protection and lack awareness on what to do to protect their customers' private data. Congratulations to Anna Chuter for successfully passing her PhD viva

Congratulations to Anna Chuter who successfully passed her PhD viva on 22 January. Anna's thesis was on “A Qualitative Analysis of the Data Assimilation Linked Ecosystem Carbon Model, DALEC”. Anna was supervised by Philip Aston and Anne Skeldon with help from Ian Roulstone.  Her examiners were Professors Shaun Quegan and Rebecca Hoyle
