What is an EngD?
The SEES Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is a four-year doctorate for researchers who aspire to key leadership positions in industry. The programme is academically equivalent to a PhD, but has one major difference – the student (or ‘Research Engineer’) spends the majority of their time at a sponsor organisation’s premises working on their commercial research priorities. They return to the IDC for short courses, conferences and seminars designed to develop specialist technical knowledge and exceptional business skills.
How does an EngD work?
The EngD benefits both student and sponsor. Over four years, the student will spend most of their time making a significant contribution to the research agenda of the industrial partner. The remainder of their time is spent at the University of Surrey, taking advanced technical courses and interacting with our experts. This ensures a constant flow of the most cutting-edge ideas back into the sponsoring organisation. Professional skills are strengthened through specialised business courses covering project management, leadership, teamwork and communication management.

The EngD programme is funded principally by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, the University of Surrey and by our sponsoring organisations.
