FHMS About Us
Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. The Faculty is the second largest in the University, with 2000 full-time and nearly 2000 part-time students. Our undergraduate programmes range from Biosciences, Chemistry and Veterinary Science to professional programmes for the health and social care sectors.
In 2012 our University has risen substantially in the league tables, moving to 12th in the Guardian league table and 22nd in the Complete University Guide. Within the faculty, the Guardian puts us 12th for Biosciences and 14th for Chemistry. The Times Good University Guide puts us as 2nd in the country for Food Science, 12th for our Nursing courses and 16th for our Biological Sciences programmes.
A key feature of our undergraduate programmes is the provision of professional or industrial placements featuring partner organisations from all over the world. This provides our graduates with a real understanding of the world of work and, for the last decade, the University of Surrey has had an unrivalled track record for graduate employability with latest figures* showing that 94.8% of our recent graduates were in employment or further study.
At postgraduate level, we offer a wide range of taught and research programmes, including Diplomas, Masters, PhDs, MDs and professional development (PD) programmes. These PD programmes are for recent graduates, health and medical practitioners and industrialists looking to enhance their skills in specialist areas.
Within the faculty is our graduate school, an intellectual virtual learning and support environment that provides a focus for our outstanding postgraduate research, supervision and training.
The Faculty is also widely recognised for world class research. Our research in the biomedical sciences is ranked in the top 5% of institutions in the country, and has led to improved understanding and treatment of diabetes, cancer, addiction, cardiovascular and infectious diseases. In addition, we have world-leading research in sleep and chronobiology and systems biology.
Whether you are here to study for a first or higher degree or are a short-term visitor, I wish you every success in your time here and warmly welcome you to our Faculty.
