University of Surrey Student awarded 'runner-up' for Nursing Award

Cajetan Ndukwe, a Mental Health Nursing student, in his final year, has just been awarded ‘runner-up’ in the prestigious Edith Cavell Leadership Awards.

Cajetan Ndukwe was one of hundreds of student nurses around the country who were considered for this award.  He won a Sony Vaio laptop and will be attending an award ceremony at Fishmonger’s Hall in London on 21st March 2013.


A mental health nurse student from Croydon in Surrey has been shortlisted for a prestigious scholarship award run by a national nursing charity.
Cajetan Ndukwe has been shortlisted for interview as a candidate for the 2012/13 Cavell Nurses' Trust Scholarship Awards.
He is now in line to win the Edith Cavell Leadership Award, which carries with it a travel scholarship worth £2000.

A total of 22 candidates who have been shortlisted for the five awards will be interviewed by a judging panel made up of prestigious and experienced nursing and midwifery individuals on February 8 in London before the successful students will be presented with their prizes during an awards ceremony at Fishmongers Hall, London, on March 21.
Cajetan, aged 36, who was previously a healthcare support worker, is currently in the third year of his mental health nursing degree at Surrey University.
 

Cavell Nurses' Trust, set up in memory of World War 1 nurse Edith Cavell following her execution in 1915, launched the Scholarship Awards last year with the aim of recognising exceptional student nurses and midwives in the UK.The awards are designed to help nursing and midwifery students at the start of their careers and are open to students currently studying nursing or midwifery on undergraduate/postgraduate or diploma courses at universities in the UK.


Applications for the 2012/13 Scholarship Awards had to be submitted before December 9 last year.
 

The award winners will be able to follow in the footsteps of student nurse Katie Ball, who spent eight weeks experiencing the healthcare provision in Malaysia last year after winning the Cavell Outstanding Student Nurse Award. Her trip included working in the accident and emergency department at of Sarawak General Hospital, followed by challenging stints working in Malaysia's deprived rural communities.


Cavell Nurses' Trust, based in Worcestershire, recently launched a three-year Centenary Appeal which will culminate in the 100th anniversary of Edith Cavell's death in October 2015. The appeal aims to double the number of beneficiaries which the charity helps through grant giving and welfare support.
