Slow ethics for fraught times

There appears to be an epidemic of unethical practices within the professions. Ann Gallagher, Reader in Nursing Ethics in FHMS, argues that we need to take a slower approach and longer view engaging with a range of perspectives on the moral life and resisting simple explanations and quick solutions.

An Academic Health Science Network

The University of Surrey is one of 60+ partners from across the NHS, HEIs and others across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, engaged in an application to become an Academic Health Science Network (AHSN). The goal of AHSNs will be to improve patient and population health outcomes by translating research into practice and developing and implementing integrated health care systems.

Innovation health and wealth (IHW) is the NHS Chief Executive’s report on the adoption and spread of innovation in the NHS. Launched by the Prime Minister in December 2011 it sets out the contribution the NHS can make to the Government’s Plan for Growth. IHW recommended that the NHS Chief Executive and the Chief Medical Officer should work with partners to designate AHSNs that will align education, clinical research, informatics, training and healthcare delivery.

Biofuel waste product recycled for electricity

A by-product of biofuel manufacture can power microbial fuel cells to generate electricitycheaply and efficiently, according to scientists presenting their work at the Society for General Microbiology’s Autumn Conference. The work could help develop self-powered devices that would depollute waste water and be used to survey weather in extreme environments.
