Cancer Research
There are currently around 15 academic members of staff actively involved in cancer research within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
Our research is characterised by excellent cooperation between the University and local hospitals, primary care trusts and industry which has enabled us to develop exciting and innovative research projects. These are supported by state of the art facilities and equipment based in the main campus and also at the Postgraduate Medical School, which allow the routine use of advanced techniques such as proteomics, microarray and quantitative PCR.
Our close collaborative links with local hospitals and clinicians has also allowed the establishment of a number of high profile clinical trials that has resulted in an unprecedented degree of cooperation between academic and clinical researchers. Other translational projects include drug and biomarker development for a range of cancers including prostate, bladder and lung, whilst research in primary care is helping to improve and refine the treatment of cancer patients in the community.
Cancer research within the FHMS has a high international profile and attracts funding from many different sources including charities, Research Councils and industry and much of our output is published in leading international journals.
