Sustaining caring practices in challenging times’ event: 6th December 2012
There have been many reports of uncaring practices in health and social care whereby patients do not receive the care and attention they require when they are at their most vulnerable. We also know that many healthcare organizations manage to sustain caring practices in, what are, challenging times. A range of explanations are suggested regarding what promotes and undermines caring practices. These relate to the attitudes and behaviour of individual practitioners, to the culture of organizations and to wider social and cultural contexts. We can learn from practice initiatives and innovations designed to promote caring practices and from research and educational initiatives.

This evening seminar brought together a panel with expertise and expertise in healthcare practice, education and research:

• Christina Patterson is a columnist at the Independent and a patient who had poor care experiences;
• Suzanne Rankin is Chief Nurse, Ashford & St Peters NHS Foundation Trust;
• Kathy Curtis is a nurse researcher who examined student nurses’ views of compassion in care;
• Carole Garrick is Director of Midwifery, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust;
• Andy Adcroft is a university researcher with expertise in strategic management; and
• Jane Leng is an educator who uses digital stories in her work with students.

The event was open and advertised to nurses and midwives in local NHS trusts and to all university student nurses and midwives and staff.  [Can we please also encourage you to forward this invitation to all your students, colleagues and Trust contacts].

The event was funded by the Ted Adams Trust & the International Centre for Nursing Ethics (ICNE), University of Surrey.

The ICNE Dignity in Care Prize and the ICNE Healthcare Student Ethical Practice Prize was presented after the discussion. Closing comments were delivered by Professor Karen Bryan.

Public Lecture: 17th November 2011
Eileen Sills CBE: ‘Achieving Dignity for Patients: Responding Creatively to Challenges in Care’ at the University of Surrey, Guildford

Speaker: Eileen Sills CBE is Chief Nurse at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Senior Nurse and Dignity Champion - she has a national reputation for strong and visible clinical leadership and has advised the Prime Minister as a member of his Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery. She was awarded a CBE in 2003 for services to nursing. She has implemented an effective and creative strategy to promote dignity in care.

Lecture summary: There has been much attention to deficits in care in the NHS of late. In some instances, patients are not receiving the care they need and relatives are left feeling distressed and powerless. Alongside this, are developments in education that promote professionalism and government and hospital initiatives to promote dignity in care. So where are we going wrong? and how can we respond constructively and creatively to challenges in care?

This lecture responded to these questions and emphasised that dignity in care is everybody's business. The speaker argued that everyone, from the boardroom to the bedside, can and should contribute to the development of a dignifying culture of care. The event also provided an opportunity for students and nurses of all grades to consider constructive strategies to promote dignity in care and to share dignity-promoting initiatives from their own practice. To view the lecture presentation please use this link.

There was also poster displays and literature available from our local NHS Trusts illustrating local dignity initiatives and examples of good practice:

An investigation into the effects of academic award on registered nurses' ability to recontextualise knowledge to allow them to deliver, organise and supervise care (AaRK)

A collaborative research project to understand how (poor) communication by nurses and midwives contributes to complaints and to explore the role of clinical leadership in promoting effective communication for nurses and midwives in responding to informal complaints (RESPONSE)
