Summary of Mass Spec Instrumentation

Applied Biosystems Quadrupole-TOF MS; QSTAR XL

Please contact Jane Newcombe regarding analyses (J.Newcombe@surrey.ac.uk)

The QSTAR XL is a hybrid quadrupole Time-of-Flight (oaToF) mass spectrometer coupled to a Dionex Ultimate 3000 nano flow HPLC system with UV detector. The mass spectrometer has MALDI and Nano electrospray ionisation sources.

Used for analysis of peptides and intact proteins.

Bruker Daltronics MALDI-TOF MS; AutoFlex

Please contact Anuska Mann regarding analyses (a.mann@surrey.ac.uk)

The AutoFlex is a Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer equipped with a 337nm nitrogen laser. The instrument can be operated in Linear or Reflectron mode.

Used for large analysing larger molecules like proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides and synthetic polymers.

Waters GC-TOF MS; GCT Classic

Please contact Dan Driscoll regarding analyses (D.Driscoll@surrey.ac.uk)

The GCT is an orthogonal acceleration Time-of-Flight (TOF) mass spectrometer coupled to an Agilent 6890 GC with both Electron Ionisation (EI) and Chemical ionisation (CI) sources. Solids can be analysed using a Direct Insertion probe.

Used for the accurate mass analysis of non-polar compounds.

ThermoQuest Finnigan GC-MS; Voyager

Please contact Dan Driscoll regarding analyses (D.Driscoll@surrey.ac.uk)

The Voyager is a single quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled to a CE Instruments 8000Top Gas Chromatograph. The mass spectrometer is equipped with Electron Ionisation (EI) and Chemical ionisation (CI) sources and has a mass range 1-1000 Da with unit mass resolution.

Used for analysing relatively small volatile non-polar compounds.

Waters Quadrupole-TOF MS; QTOF Premier

Please contact Anuska Mann regarding analyses (a.mann@surrey.ac.uk)

The Q-TOF Premier™ is a hybrid quadrupole Time-of-Flight (oaToF) tandem mass spectrometer coupled to a Waters Acquity UPLC system and UV detector. The instrument has both Electrospray ionisation (ESI) and ESCi™ Multi-Mode Ionisation sources. ESCi ™ allows high speed switching between Electrospray ionisation and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation acquisitions in a single run. The instrument also utilises LockSpray™ technology to ensure good mass accuracy (3ppm RMS).

Used for metabolite profiling and good for the accurate mass analysis of relatively polar compounds.

Waters TOF MS; LCT Classic

Please contact Anuska Mann regarding analyses (a.mann@surrey.ac.uk)

The LCT is an orthogonal acceleration Time-of-Flight (TOF) mass spectrometer coupled to a Waters Alliance 2695 HPLC and UV detector. The instrument has both Electrospray Ionisation (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI) sources.

Used for accurate mass analysis of relatively polar compounds.

ThermoFinnigan 3D Quadrupole Ion trap MS; LCQ Deca XP Plus

Please contact Anuska Mann regarding analyses (a.mann@surrey.ac.uk)

The LCQ Deca XP Plus is a 3D quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer coupled to a Surveyor HPLC with a Photodiode array detector. The instrument is equipped with Electrospray Ionisation (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI) sources and has a mass range of 50 - 4000 Da. The instrument can perform MS, MS/MS and MSn acquisitions.

Used for analysing relatively low molecular weight compounds and for identifying unknown compounds.
