Six months old and already winning elections

Tuesday 18 October 2011

The Department of Health Care management and Policy is just over six months old but has already been elected an institutional member of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).

At a ceremony in Oslo, Professor Simon de Lusignan accepted the certificate of membership from Professor Fernando Martin Sanchez, Vice President of IMIA and Head of Health-Biomedical Informatics Research at Melbourne University.

Surrey academics have also contributed to two papers in this year’s IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics. Professor de Lusignan, Dr Charitini Stavropoulou  and Professor Chris Pearce, a visiting senior research fellow, co-authored with others a paper looking at the use of information technology in clinical consultation.

Professor Paul Krause and Georgios Michalakidis from Surrey’s Department of Computing also joined Professor de Lusignan and others in co-authoring a paper examining the assessment of data for international research. Collaboration with colleagues from around the university has been feature of the Dept of Health Care Management and Policy’s early success. As Prof de Lusignan said, “We’re already reaping the benefits of being in a University within Surrey’s unique multidisciplinary environment. I’m working with people who are among the best in their field and are ready to apply what they are doing to my field.”
