Surrey Health Care Graduate Lands Top Job

Beauty Chakani

“The most important thing I have learnt at the University of Surrey is that with the right support and hard work, the sky will be the only limit”.

In September 2012, Beauty Chakani completed her part-time Master’s degree in Health Care Management alongside a full-time job as a staff nurse in charge of ten care-givers at a home for people living with dementia. Within three months of graduating, she had won herself a highly prized position as manager of a seventy-bed care centre in Tonbridge Wells.

When Beauty first decided to move into a nursing career, she chose the University of Surrey to study for her original diploma and nursing degree.  “The University of Surrey has always been my University of choice because it has been very easy for me to find the jobs I wanted soon after completing my studies,” says Beauty. “I’ve personally found both my tutors and the teaching system very supportive and encouraging.”  When Beauty recently decided to step her career up another gear, it made sense to return to Surrey to build on her existing skills and knowledge.

The breadth of options available on the Health Care Management Master’s programme allowed Beauty to cultivate her strong interest in leadership and management, allowing her to combine modules such as healthcare functions and systems, organisational behaviour, health care operations management, financial management and health economics.

Describing herself as “self-motivated, reliable, hardworking, organised and capable under pressure”, the managerial exposure she has gained in the medical profession together with early career experiences running her own corporate uniforms’ business have proved the perfect complement to her postgraduate studies. “I have a clear, logical mind with a practical approach to problem solving”, says Beauty, “and a drive to see things through to completion”.

Having only recently completed her Master’s degree, Beauty is already well on the way to fulfilling her ambition to make a valued contribution to the future development of healthcare provision.
