There have been many reports of uncaring practices in health and social care whereby patients do not receive the care and attention they require when they are at their most vulnerable. We also know that many healthcare organizations manage to sustain caring practices in, what are, challenging times. A range of explanations are suggested regarding what promotes and undermines caring practices. These relate to the attitudes and behavior of individual practitioners, to the culture of organizations and to wider social and cultural contexts. We can learn from practice initiatives and innovations designed to promote caring practices and from research and educational initiatives.

This evening seminar will bring together a panel with expertise and expertise in healthcare practice and research:

• Christina Patterson is a writer and a patient who had poor care experiences;
• Suzanne Rankin, Chief Nurse, Ashford & St Peters NHS Foundation Trust
• Carole Garrick, Director of Midwifery [please check Trust and add – Thank you]
• Kathy Curtis is a nurse researcher who examined student nurses’ views of compassion in care;
• Andy Adcroft, a university researcher with expertise in strategic management.

Each speaker will present for 10 minutes and there will then be a discussion exploring the questions:

• What do we mean by ‘caring practices’?
• What are the current challenges that may undermine caring practices?
• How can we explain uncaring practices?
• How can individuals, healthcare organisations and societies contribute to the development and sustainability of caring practices?

The event will be open and advertised to nurses and midwives in local NHS trusts and to all university student nurses and midwives and staff.
