Antenatal Perineal Care Clinic (RSCH) – Supporting Normal Birth

Wednesday 26 September 2012

Dr Angie Wilson, Midwifery Tutor at the University has successfully opened an Antenatal Perineal Care Clinic on 13 June 2012 attached to the Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH).

As a specialist perineal care midwife, Angie offers women the opportunity to share their concerns and anxieties about previous problematic perineal trauma in a confidential and relaxed environment. The consultation and risk assessment provides women with an individualised perineal care pathway which can be incorporated into their birth plan with their named midwife. The aim is to empower women to minimise the occurrence of obstetric perineal trauma (OPT) and subsequent morbidity at their next delivery.

The clinic runs bi-monthly at Bellfield’s Children’s Centre in Guildford and supports the Birth Option Clinic - Normalising Childbirth. Women who are booked to have their baby at the RSCH can be referred by Midwives from the antenatal clinic and community, Consultant Obstetricians, Physiotherapists, GPs and women themselves.

Angie will be conducting a clinical Audit in 2013 to investigate the effectiveness of this new clinic on women’s satisfaction, mode of delivery and perineal outcomes. The clinic will also offer educational opportunities for both staff and students at the RSCH in the future.
