Biography

Nursing training at Poole General Hospital, Dorset. Specialised in neurological nursing in Johannesburg – South Africa 1975-1979. Midwifery Training at Poole general Hospital, Dorset – 1979-1980. Worked as community midwife in Slough, attached to Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Berkshire. Community Midwife attached to Queen Charlottes Maternity Hospital, London W6. Midwifery Tutor since 1986 attached to Francis Harrison College and subsequently University of Surrey, EIHMS (FHMS) in 1999. Midwifery educational tour of China 1998 – Local maternity and government policy issues.  Midwifery and Childcare tour to Southern India 2010 - meeting the MDGs agenda for Maternal Mortality.

Interests in Non-interventionist approach to midwifery care. Parenthood Education. Maternal Pain. Women’s issues, particularly pertaining to perineal trauma, repair and sexuality. Feminist philosophies integrated into midwifery education and practice

Research Interests

PhD, combining quantitative and qualitative research in: an evaluation of the midwives’ and students’ experience undertaking perineal repair in clinical practice.

Departmental Duties

Responsible for above modules some of their administration, personal student support in University and Link Trust – Frimley Park Hospital. Representation at appropriate management meetings and Exam Boards.

Antenatal Perineal Care Clinic

Dr Wilson is also a Specialist Perineal Care Midwife and has set up and established an Antenatal Perineal Care Clinic at Bellfield's Children's Centre in Guildford in association with the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

This clinic provides women with support and advice relating to previous perineal trauma, enabling them to minimise perineal problems in subsequent deliveries and make informed choices regarding mode of delivery, thus supporting the 'Normalising childbirth' philosophy of midwifery care.
