Biography
15 years experience as a midwife in the UK, in all areas of midwifery, interrupted by three years experience as a community nurse/midwife in Paraguay. In the last 12 years I have gained experience in teaching and assessing across a range of nursing and midwifery courses from Level 0 to M Level and provided in-service education and mentor updates in my link units. I supervise dissertation students at first degree and masters level.
In 2005 I took 6 months unpaid leave to support temporary staff in a clinic on the island of Helene off the cost of Honduras. I acted as a nurse/ midwife and dealt with a number of obstetric emergencies as well as many minor ailments. I have had little time to update my clinical practice in the last 4 years and I am currently arranging opportunities to update my practice in my local NHS trust.
Research Interests
I have supported masters' students in planning research projects both within Britain and overseas.
1993 MSc dissertation ‘Giving complementary feeds to breast fed babies in the first week of life: Who makes the decision, when and why? ‘
Teaching
I am Director of Studies for the Midwifery Diploma Programme and for the new programme for the 18/12 degree and a module leader for a number of undergraduate modules. I have supervised three PGCEA students and helped new tutorial staff to orientate to our Division.
Current modules for which I am module leader:-
- Individualising evidence based care
- Evidence and choice in childbearing
- Facilitating choice – managing risk
Departmental Duties
As a Director of Studies, I am an active member of the exam board participating in pre-board and mitigating circumstances meetings. I assist the admissions officer in admissions issues. I have participated in curriculum planning on a number of occasions but most recently leading to the successful validation of our midwifery programmes for 5 years. I co-chair programme management teams and have prepared for various NMC and QAA assessments/reviews. I regularly attend the staff-student liaison committee.
