Overseas Visits
The campus is within easy reach of both Gatwick and Heathrow airports allowing access to Europe and beyond by air. Many budget fares are available and a number of UK travel agencies specialise in budget travel for students. In addition to the large, international airlines, services are also offered by smaller airlines that specialise in short flights within Europe, and these sometimes offer the lowest fares. Alternatively you can use the ferry or train through the Channel Tunnel. Do be careful with advertised ‘low cost’ fares (for example £3.50 to Paris!) – the quoted amount does not include taxes, which may be at least £30.
If you wish to visit other countries, perhaps for a holiday or to attend a conference, you may need to apply for a visa. For example, visitors to countries in the European Union require a Schengen visa and full details can be found on the embassy’s website of the country concerned. Students will require a letter to verify their student status and this is available from the International Student Office. Please note that most embassies require you to make an appointment and apply in person.
The waiting time for such appointments can be quite long at busy times such as Christmas and Easter, so ensure that you book well in advance of your visit and give the International Student Office time to prepare the letter before your appointment.
You will need to check the amount of time left on your student visa and also check that your passport is not going to expire while you are away. You should also check if your medical insurance covers you for the countries you are visiting – the National Health Service, for example, only applies in the UK. You may need to take out separate medical insurance, either through a specialist insurance company or travel agent.
