Travel around the UK
The University of Surrey is very close to the centre of Guildford. It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the campus to the centre of town or you can take a bus from several stops around campus. The journey takes about 5 minutes, buses go every 10 minutes and the ticket costs about 80p one way and £1 return.
Students can buy a bus pass for three months (£50) or for a year (£120) online and collect from the Cashiers Office in Senate House. This allows unlimited travel in the Guildford area and gives quick and easy access to its cultural social, retail and sporting attractions.
As a full-time student you can also apply for a 16-25 Railcard which is available for all full-time students including those aged over 26. This gives you up to 1/3 discount every time you buy a train ticket so is worthwhile if you plan to travel a lot by train whilst in the UK. Application forms are available from the train station and need to be stamped by the International Student Office, before being returned to the station with a £26 fee.
National Express operates a comprehensive coach service across the UK and this can often work out cheaper than other forms of travel. There is a coach stop outside the Tesco supermarket, a few minutes’ walk from the campus, but journeys often take longer and sometimes involve several changes on one journey. You can buy a Young Person’s Coachcard which will save you 30% on many National Express journeys and costs £10 for one year or £25 for three years. It is wise to book tickets in advance via the National Express website as seating is limited.
Guildford is ideally situated for visiting London and the south coast by train or coach and there are a great many interesting places to visit all around the UK.
If you would like to learn more about the British way of life and spend a weekend with a host family, HOST UK will help organise a short break where ever you choose in the UK There are no charges for accommodation or food - all you have to pay for is the travel, although students will be liable for administrative charges if bookings are cancelled at the last minute.
