I originally completed a Masters program in Information & Business Systems Engineering at Surrey in 2007 and have since returned to the university as a PhD research student in Water and Chemical Processes Engineering. There are a number of reasons as to why I chose Surrey University again. Firstly, I really like the location of the university, it is close to the town centre and yet still campus based. There is a mainline train station, which is roughly 10 minute walk from campus and it allows you to get to central London in approximately 35 minutes. The town centre itself is very convenient as it has a lot of shops for your needs.

Another great thing I have experienced at Surrey is that the facilities are really remarkable. The library has recently been extended with many more seating and study areas for students. The library staffs are really helpful, and within the library splash courses are run, I really appreciate them and the opportunity to share knowledge with other fellow students and further enhance my writing and presentation skills. Between leaving the university from completing my masters and returning to study my PhD, a new sports park a short walk from the main campus has been developed. The sport park houses a really large swimming pool, climbing walls, basketball courts and many other wonderful facilities for me to workout during my weekend with my friends.

My PhD is going really well and I have to credit my supervisors for all their advices and support. I think studying a PhD where the experienced teaching staffs and easy going administrative staffs fully supporting the students make it a even more relaxing and enjoyable experience. At the same time, the infrastructure in terms of IT and software support are excellent as well. This is an important reason why I have decided to come back to Surrey over other UK universities.

My advice to other Taiwanese students thinking about studying in the UK or possibly Surrey would be to know exactly what you want to do and fundamentally enjoy the university life and make the most of all the opportunities that are available to you.
