International funding

The University has a number of funds to support implementation of its international strategy.

The UGPN Research Collaboration Fund

This will provide funding of up to US$20,000 (bilateral projects), US$30,000 (trilateral projects) or US$40,000 (quadrilateral projects) for high quality research collaborations between researchers at the University of São Paulo, North Carolina State University, the University of Wollongong and the University of Surrey. The FAPESP-Surrey Cooperation Agreement

The University is pleased to confirm the renewal of its agreement with the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The agreement aims to  facilitate research collaborations between staff at the University of Surrey and in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Surrey’s partnership with FAPESP includes involvement in the SPRINT Call for Proposals - 3rd Edition/2016, the main points of which are highlighted below:

•             The call is now open and invites collaborators to apply for funds for travel and subsistence expenses in relation to a research project already   funded by FAPESP, from any academic discipline.
•             The maximum amount available is up to £6,000 from the University of Surrey and matched funds from FAPESP for the São Paulo collaborator.
•             The maximum duration of each project is 2 years.
•             The deadline for applications is 31st October 2016.

Further information including how to apply can be found on the FAPESP website.

External funds

There are a range of sources of external funding for international collaboration.  Some of the key sources are highlighted here.

The UK Research Councils run a number of schemes to support activities that foster international collaboration.

The European Commission, through the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme, helps research organisations to set up or strengthen long term cooperation, through a coordinated exchange programme for their staff.

The British Academy offers funding opportunities for UK scholars and partners overseas to engage in international collaborative research in the humanities and social sciences. The Academy also offers support for UK scholars seeking to undertake a period of research abroad and for early career scholars from other countries seeking to undertake research in the UK.

The British Council runs a number of schemes that support UK Higher Education Institution in the establishment of international partnerships.  The UK India Education and Research Initiative, for example, has a focus on innovation and new areas of development.

The Leverhulme Trust has four international travel schemes – study abroad fellowships, study abroad studentships, research fellowships and international networks.  The international  network scheme, for example, enables a Principal Investigator based in the UK to lead a research project where its successful completion is dependant on the participation of relevant overseas institutions.

Funding databases

The Euraxess UK website, hosted by the British Council, enables researchers to search for international funding opportunities, including travel to conferences, short research visits and fellowships.

Information on international funding opportunities is contained in Research Professional, the electronic news and research alerts service provided by Research Fortnight.
