The University of Surrey’s International Strategy is built on three types of engagement; Global Partnerships, Strategic Partnerships and Bilteral Accords. The University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) is a new approach to partnerships, focusing on deep engagement with a small number of institutions across the world. These institutions are selected against a number of criteria including their areas of research excellence, research synergies with Surrey and with other institutions within the GPN, their international ranking and a commitment to internationalisation.
The UGPN is a consortium with a difference. Professor Colin Grant, then Pro Vice-Chancellor of International Relations, says “International consortia tend to be loose collaborations, but the UGPN we are building embodies a marked shift to in-depth, research-led collaboration with a commitment to tangible research outcomes, but also staff and student mobility”. The UGPN was launched on 1 September 2011 at the University of Surrey.
