Among the challenges posed by globalised networks (whether reckoned in terms of flows of people, resources or information) is the emergence of new forms of corruption and the opportunities to extend, internationally, formerly localised corrupt practices. Global interconnectedness not only offers new opportunities for the spread of corruption but, simultaneously, poses significant governance problems. The manner in which such governance issues are resolved will be consequential for international relations, national freedoms and individual life-chances. It is ever more apparent that many corrupt acts now have the power to impact on an international scale, from the distribution of international aid, the securing of commercial contracts, to the application of responsibilities in international law.

Research on corruption has tended to focus on specific issues relevant to particular disciplines, often emphasising problems of public administration, definition and taxonomy. This seminar aims to extend existing work by targeting corruption’s global implications from a multi-disciplinary perspective. It will develop a research agenda that focuses specifically on the international manifestations and ramifications of this issue, informed by an explicitly multi-disciplinary stance – a novel development in this field. The seminar’s premise is that corruption is a multi-dimensional social phenomenon that transcends the boundaries of individual nations and academic disciplines, demanding a sensitivity to cultural and political context, social structure, and individual and group norms and dynamics.

Speakers will include international experts (academics and practitioners) on corruption from a number of disciplines such as Anthropology, Public Administration and Governance, Law, and Business Studies.

The intention is to promote extensive and open dialogue between speakers and audience, working towards the formation of an international network for the promotion of corruption research. Attendance will be restricted to 35 participants to capitalise on the opportunity for in-depth discussion and development of ideas.

Speakers include:

  • Mr Francoise Vincke - Chairman of the Anti-corruption Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris since 1994.
  • Professor John Hatchard – Open University UK
  • Mr Michel van Hulten - SAXION University, The Netherlands. Longstanding writer on corruption and co-establisher of Transparency International.
  • Professor Heinzpeter Znoj - Bern University. Social and Legal Anthropologist
  • Mr Bertrand deSpeville -  De Speville and Associates
  • Professor Luis de Sousa - CIES-ISCTE, Portugal, Gulbenkian Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies/European University Institute, Florence, Italy

It is planned to publish the proceedings as a journal special edition or edited volume, and to use the seminar to launch.
