Studying Law was a long-term ambition for Danny McCarthy, aged 20 from Southampton. And with three A’s at A-Level the University of Surrey's Clearing team helped him to secure a place at the School of Law.

Danny had initially had other plans, but after visiting the University of Surrey he made a decision to change direction. "I had visited Surrey on an open day a few weeks before A-Level results day and really enjoyed the experience," he said. "Everyone was so friendly and the campus was so welcoming. As soon as I arrived at Surrey and looked around I knew irrespective of what grades I got, Surrey was the place I wanted to end up, even though I had previously listed it as my insurance choice."

Although Danny was initially concerned about the Clearing process he found there was nothing to worry about. "My experience of Clearing was really positive and much easier than I was expecting. As I was changing my plans at the last minute I was worried about potential complications, but everyone I spoke to made everything so much easier."

Danny faced an immediate obstacle but the team at Surrey worked with him to ensure the best outcome. "At first I was told the course was full, but after a number of conversations with the Clearing team I secured a place at Surrey. I am still very thankful to everyone who helped me."

One year into his course and Danny is enjoying every aspect of his experience at the University of Surrey. "Studying Law is intellectually challenging and constantly stimulating. I truly believe it’s the most relevant to life subject one could study." It’s not only the subject matter that has been positive for Danny, as he explained. "The staff are also very welcoming, as well as being incredibly knowledgeable in their subject experts. With Law there is naturally the need for clarification and explanation a lot of the time and the staff make clear that they welcome questions we may have on the law in general."
