Top of Their Class

Monday 5 November 2012

When Surrey law students and graduates enter the world of work, whether it is to begin a fledgling career in the legal profession, plant those first tentative steps into the political arena or indeed embark on any other career, our goal remains the same.  We guarantee that our students will have received the highest standard of academic tuition, developed well-honed critical and analytical skills, and been challenged to engage with the latest ideas and debate igniting the legal world.

Over the summer break, the University of Surrey’s School of Law attracted more academics into the fold, bringing with them a wealth of experience and research excellence, along with the very latest ideas, to deliver that promise to students. Our new recruits arrive on Surrey turf with outstanding academic credentials gained across the globe. Between them they have held teaching, research and legal posts in the United States and Hong Kong, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, the United Kingdom and Serbia.

Their experience ranges from practising at the Bar and course design at a leading College of Law, to legislative work in the field of international criminal law for the UN, and posts in the Senate Opposition Research Office of the Progressive-Conservative Party of Canada and the Department of Justice at the U.S. Embassy in Serbia.

Dr Arman Sarvarian, Barrister, brings with him an excellent knowledge of public international law.  He is an expert in legal ethics, having researched professional ethics at the international Bar for his PhD.  Since 2011, he has been a member of the International Bar Association Task Force on Counsel Ethics in International Arbitration.  Arman is also an authority on the art of mooting. Last year, he coached the winning team (UCL) of the Telders International Round held at the International Court of Justice, having previously been a competitor.  We’re thrilled to announce that in 2013 he will be acting as coach of the first-ever mooting team from the University of Surrey to enter the Jessup competition.

Political Scientist Rudy Baker touches down in Surrey having previously held posts in the United States at Pepperdine University (School of Law), as well as in Bosnia-Herzegovina at the University of East Sarajevo (Faculty of Law).  He is an expert in the growing field of international criminal law and previously worked in both the Senate Opposition Research Office of the Progressive-Conservative Party of Canada and the Department of Justice Resident Legal Advisor's Office of the U.S. Embassy in Serbia.

The journey to Surrey was less arduous for Elaine Carter, who made the short hop over from the Guildford College of Law where she was Associate Professor, course designer and external examiner for the Solicitors Regulation Authority.  Elaine is a Property Law expert, with extensive experience in designing and directing courses in Land and Equity, Housing Law and Property Law.

Joining us from academic posts in the Far East, by way of the universities of Dundee and Central Michigan, Dr John Ho is a researcher in the field of Company Law, Corporate Governance and Labour Law.  Before arriving at Surrey he was an Assistant Professor at the School of Law, City University of Hong Kong and Visiting Lecturer at the School of Accounting & Finance, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also served as a Research Associate at the Centre for Corporate Governance and Financial Policy at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

Dr Daniele Canestri comes to the Surrey School of Law as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant following work with the UNODC (United Nations Office in Drugs and Crimes), the EU and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Daniele has also drafted anti-corruption legislation for a number of developing countries.

We believe that the breadth of experience and expertise brought to the School by these new faculty members reflects the aspirations of Surrey graduates who look not only to ‘big law’ for their future careers but also beyond, to the worlds of international relations, public affairs and a vast array of non-legal careers in which analytical thinking and professional acumen is prized.

Two of our students, one now an alumna, stand testament to the depth and breadth of our academic teaching.  James Noguera, currently a final year undergrad, has recently returned from an internship with the New York City Council.  In this short film, James tells the story of how the School of Law prepared him for life on the fringes of political office  -  while graduate and Surrey alumna Aisleen Pugh recounts her time as a student and her burgeoning career as a lawyer.
