SILC Research
The Centre seeks to build on the diverse interests of a number of members of academic staff and PhD students.
International Commercial and Financial Law
SILC members are actively involved in researching areas as diverse as international trade and transport, international issues in intellectual property, foreign direct investment, international banking regulation, international anti-money laundering standards and practices, and corruption. An AHRC-funded project analysing the building of a framework for combating corruption in the international business environment has recently been completed successfully.
International Criminal Law and Law of Armed Conflict
Research focuses on the development of international criminal procedures and the extension of individual criminal responsibility. Current research projects include among others the role of victims before the International Criminal tribunals, the development of plea bargaining and international corporate criminal responsibility. Research is also being undertaken on the legal justification for armed conflict, the conduct of conflict and related humanitarian law obligations as well as theories and methodologies.
International Environmental Law
Research focuses primarily on international climate change law and policy and international water law and policy related topics. In these fields SILC collaborates with the Environmental Regulatory Research Group, also based at the School of Law, where researchers also focus on areas such as natural resources and environmental and public health.
International Human Rights
Members of the Centre undertake research in international human rights law. There is a particular focus on children’s rights and human rights in Africa as well as on economic and social rights pertaining to employment, immigration and reproductive health.
