Information for schools and 6th form colleges

Introduction

The School of Law at the University of Surrey is keen to work with schools and colleges to introduce and encourage the study of law. We work mainly in the Surrey/ Hampshire/ Sussex area but are also happy to engage with schools or colleges elsewhere in the country. We believe that the study of law is an option for any academically able student irrespective of background and that assistance should be given to students in deciding whether the study of law or a career as a lawyer is best for them.

Furthermore, given the impact of law on the day to day affairs of all members of society, we offer talks and other teaching and outreach events to students taking non-law subjects where some legal knowledge is required or thought beneficial.

As part of the widening participation aims of the University of Surrey as a whole, the School of Law aspires to involve a wider population of school children in talking about and understanding the law as it impacts upon them and upon society.

Talks and Events for Schools and Colleges

Members of the School of Law are happy to provide a range of talks and events for students at schools and colleges. Previous events we have run include:

We have run events both on the University campus and at schools at their request. Legal content during such events tends predominantly to be in the areas of contract law, criminal law, public law and the legal system. However members of staff may be able to cover other areas upon request.

Online Resources for Tutors

Most of our support for tutors comes through face-to-face sessions with students; however we are happy to provide assistance to tutors in keeping up to date with the constantly changing legal world.

You may also wish to view the University's Teachers and Careers Advisors Web pages for more information about wider initiatives to offer support for tutors.

Liaison with Schools and Tutors

The School of Law is keen not only to talk to students about legal study but also to tutors and careers advisors about the transition from A level study to undergraduate legal study. This transition is often proving to be the biggest educational step that many students have faced and The School of Law is committed to a dialogue with those provided 6th form education about how this transition can be made more successfully.
