Visiting the Archive
Opening Times
The E.H. Shepard Archive is open by advance appointment only. The Archive is closed whenever the University of Surrey library is closed: please check the University of Surrey 's website, www.surrey.ac.uk, for more information on closures if necessary.
To book an appointment, please contact the E.H. Shepard Archive: email shepardarchive@surrey.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0)1483 689600. If you have an immediate and pressing need to use the archive, please make this clear when you contact us.
Access
The E.H. Shepard Archive is open to a variety of visitors: researchers of all backgrounds and levels, and groups wishing to view or film items from the archive.
At the moment, the archive shares study/exhibition space with another of the University of Surrey 's special collections, and is extremely short-staffed. Because space and staff are at a premium, those using the archive for research purposes take precedence in appointments.
Moreover, priority in appointments will be given to those who: a) can show a pressing scholarly need to view the documents (for a thesis, a soon-to-be published book, or similar, for example) and/or b) present a minimal staffing burden (ie, they have already identified the exact documents they need to see from the catalogue and have communicated this to archive staff). We thank you for your understanding.
Access to documents in the archives which have not been catalogued, preserved, or conserved may be limited: at the moment, this is limited to the archive's internal records. Staff also reserve the right to refuse access to individual documents which are in a poor state of preservation.
All visitors to the archive study room are expected to comply with the study room regulations and the university library's regulations. Any user consulting archival documents (ie, researchers and film crew) will be asked to sign an undertaking that they will comply with the Data Protection Act 1998.
More Information
You can find more information in the links to the right, including documents to view or download: our study room guidelines, guidelines for group and filming visits, information about how to get to the archive, and visit booking forms. Filling in and returning a booking form will expedite the process of arranging a visit. Researchers and film crew who already know which documents they wish to view may save more time by filling in and returning a document request slip.
