Distance Learners' FAQs

DiLIS FAQs

Who is eligible to use DiLIS?

All students who are distance learners on designated distance learning courses at the University of Surrey, regardless of proximity to Guildford. DiLIS support is also available to registered part-time research students at the University.

Do I need a password to use DiLIS?

No. Provided you are a recognised distance learner at the University you are entitled to use the services. We ask that you confirm your university number when making a request.

Can I send my requests by email or fax?

For books, yes. Postal loans are restricted to addresses in the UK and the EU plus Switzerland.

For copies of printed material, including journal articles, you must post, fax or email an original signed

Document Delivery Request Form (26.57KB - Requires Adobe Reader)

 for each article.

We cannot accept email requests for copies of printed material because of the legal requirement for a signature for Copyright compliance.

How do I pay for photocopies of articles ordered?

Charges will be added to your library account and can be paid in person at Lending Services, by post or by credit/debit card over the phone. Charges should be cleared promptly and you will be sent an account for unpaid DiLIS charges on a quarterly basis.

Can you send me my campus card through the post?

We cannot send you your campus card by post because we attach a digital photograph directly onto the card and this is taken at the time the card is issued. If you require a letter of confirmation of registration, ie, for access to other libraries, please contact DiLIS.

You do not require a campus card to use DiLIS but you must be a registered student.

How do I register for IT services if I am off campus?

All undergraduate and postgraduate students are automatically registered for an IT Services account. Registry enters details on to the central database and allocates all new students a individual university number. Responsibility for sending you details of your login user name and initial password when you first register normally rests with your Department but you may check these details online via the IT services webpages (see Accessing Electronic Resources)

What if I forget my network password?

Contact usersupport@surrey.ac.uk who will reset the password for you back to the default for you to change again. You must include your student number in the email.

What about access to other libraries?

The University Library is a member of SCONUL Access which enables part-time and distance learning students to have access and borrowing rights to other university and college libraries nearer to home or workplace across the UK.

This valuable scheme allows distance learning students to join up to other participating academic libraries - more information can be found on the SCONUL Access web page.

Completed application forms should be returned to the Library Membership section at the University Library address. Please include a postal address with your application.
