Services for Health and Social Care Students

The University Library stocks books and journals to support of your course. Before you go on placement be sure you gather any printed books and articles you need for assessments and know how to renew your books:

1. By phone to the Support Hub 01483 689235
2. Via the online Library catalogue (university number and PIN required)

Book Loans from the University Library

The My Account option on the catalogue provides information about your own use of the library. You need to enter your university number and your PIN number.

Ensure you collect your PIN number from the Support Hub, or by emailing: library-enquiries@surrey.ac.uk BEFORE you go on placement.

You can renew your books this way but remember that fines are automatically charged on overdue loans.

Renewal Tips :

  • Set yourself a regular renewals day and use the My Account option to check and renew your books.
  • It is a good idea to renew your books 2-3 days before they are due to give yourself time to return any that cannot be renewed. Remember that reserved books cannot be renewed.
  • You can renew books before they are due back. The new date is counted from the day you renew. You can renew books with no limit on the number of renewals provided that the item is not reserved and your account is not blocked.
  • The fines on Short Loan books are large, so make sure that you will be able to return any Short Loan books within the loan period, should renewal not be possible.
  • When renewing a book, write the new due date on the date label at the front of the book. This will act as a reminder of when the book is now due.
  • Once your books are overdue, or if you have any fine outstanding, you will be unable to renew books yourself using the My Account. Contact the Support Hub.
  • Remember that you are responsible for any fines on your borrower record and for the return of all books issued to your card.

Off Site Library Services for Health & Social Care Students

Additional help is available to assist students on placement with unexpected information needs. For example, where the NHS Libraries do not have sufficient journal access, requests can be submitted for articles available from the University Library.

This help is available via the Distance Learners Information Service (DiLIS).

Contact DiLIS on 01483 689602 or email: dilis@surrey.ac.uk for more information.
Please note this service is not available to students based at Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Remember; in cases of difficulty accessing resources while on placement do feel free to contact Karen Gravett, Academic Liaison Librarian k.gravett@surrey.ac.uk who will be able to advise you on what help is available.
