A2 Dance: Focus on Zero Degrees (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui & Akram Khan, 2005)
Saturday 2nd March 2013

This day will explore delivering the set work zero degrees to address the requirements of the A Level specification.  It will provide a contextual overview, key points and analysis.  It will also include warming up in an appropriate style and exploration of the repertoire practically and theoretically in relation to supporting the content of other AS/A2 units.

A2 Dance: Focus on West Side Story and Jerome Robbins
Saturday 13th October 2012

This course will examine the Set Work West Side Story choreographed by Jerome Robbins. The day will focus on Robbins as a practitioner, the context of West Side Story in relation to the development of Musical Theatre as a dance genre. Approaches to the analysis of the choreographed sections and their context will be considered through practical and theoretical tasks during the day in relation to the requirements of the A Level specification.

A2 Dance: Focus on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
Sunday 14th October 2012

A course examining the Area of Study Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater 1958-current providing historical and cultural context. There will be a specific focus on identifying key practitioners and their stylistic characteristics. Through practical and theoretical exploration, the day will provide a model of how to approach an area study and task setting.  It will include ideas for preparing for Unit 3 Dance Appreciation and the solo based on a practitioner for the Unit 4 Performance task.

GCSE Dance: Raising Standards in Choreography and Performance
Saturday 10th November 2012

This workshop will be a mixture of practical and theory. It will focus on identifying how to help students understand and fully meet the criteria for Units 3, 4a and 4b and how to successfully integrate performance and choreography into course planning. It will also provide a series of progressive choreographic and creative tasks that will support student achievement in Unit 4a (composition) and Unit 4b (choreography). The day will include opportunity for discussion of high quality performance and choreography with the use of visual examples.

Forthcoming Courses 

Summer School – Sun 28th – Wed 31st July 2013
An intensive week of training and networking; the course focuses on KS3, GCSE & A Level Dance. Delegates can attend for one day or up to all four and can be day or residential delegates. This is a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the year ahead, network with colleagues, share ideas, make new friends and contacts, and refresh your practice.  Further details available in late Spring 2012.

The NRCD can provide inset tailored specifically to individual needs.  We use experienced teachers who can visit your centre and provide one-to-one teacher guidance or deliver direct to your students.

All courses run between 10.15 am and 4.30 pm unless otherwise stated in your confirmation

Terms and Conditions

Course Timings: Unless otherwise indicated in course confirmation details all courses start with registration at 10.15am, teaching begins at 10.30am and the day finishes at 4.30pm.

Bookings: Telephone reservations cannot be accepted.  We can only reserve you a place if we receive a completed application form with appropriate payment or invoice details by the closing date and if the course is not full.  Places are limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment, especially for set work and set dance days.

Cancellation: If you withdraw before the closing date, a 25% administrative fee will be retained.  If you withdraw on or after the closing date or are unable to attend a course, for any reason including illness, injury, bad weather or travel problems, no refund will be made.  If for any reason the NRCD has to cancel the course, your fee will be refunded in full.  The NRCD reserves the right to cancel any courses which are under-subscribed or where other factors necessitate cancellation.

Loss or Injury: No responsibility is accepted by the University of Surrey or the organisers of the day for any loss of property or personal injury. Participants are, therefore, advised to arrange their own insurance against accident, injury and loss of personal property.

 

Tutor Biographies

Gail Graves  
Gail trained at London College of Dance and Drama and Roehampton Institute. She has been teaching in further and higher education for 17 years and has taught across a wide range of Performing Arts and Dance courses including GCSE, BTEC and AS/A Level Dance. Gail has worked as a moderator and external examiner on Dance and Performance courses, is an examiner and course team leader for A Level Dance and is the Head of Vocational Studies at the Royal Ballet Upper School. She has worked as a freelance presenter for a number of organisations and authored the Les Noces resource pack published by the NRCD.

Gillian Lenton
Gillian has an MA from the University of Surrey and teaches KS3 & 4, AS and A Level Dance and A Level Theatre Studies at Weald of Kent Grammar School for Girls, also GCSE and A Level Dance at the Royal Academy of Dance. Gillian is a freelance teacher for the NRCD and other dance organisations, regularly teaching around the UK, and she has contributed to a number of education publications.

Penny Perrett
Penny originally trained as a PE teacher before specialising in Dance. She taught dance in a range of schools and was an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) before becoming an advisory teacher in Worcestershire.  She has led courses for teachers in all phases of education and was part of the team who produced the teaching framework for dance for Youth Dance England. For many years she was a member of the board of the National Dance Teachers Association, she is a moderator, leads a team of moderators and is also a controlled assessment advisor.  Penny currently works in a freelance capacity offering advice and support.

Lorna Sanders
Lorna trained at London College of Dance and has a PhD from the University of Surrey. She has taught from pre-school to higher education and in community contexts. Her PhD constructed a theoretical reconceptualisation of the subject of dance in education, looking specifically at GCSE and A Level Dance which she taught, moderated and examined for many years. Consultancy work includes the development of the 'Gifted and Talented Framework' for the Youth Sport Trust/Dance Network; and assessor for the new Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning (Children and Young People). Lorna delivers numerous inset courses and is a dance writer with articles, educational publications and two books to her name. She was assistant editor for the 2nd edition of Routledge’s Fifty Contemporary Choreographers published in 2011; and recently edited a book on dance teaching and pedagogy to be published by Youth Dance England in 2012. Currently, she lectures in Malta and Holland on part time MA courses in dance; and is Professional Development Manager (Education and Community) at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
