Research Degree Supervision (I): Foundations

This workshop is the first of a series, and is principally designed for staff who are relatively new to the supervision of research degree candidates, although it may also be of interest to more experienced practitioners. It concentrates on supervision of doctoral degrees (PhDs and professional / practitioner doctorates) but elements may also be of interest to those supervising at Masters level.

The workshop is grounded in practice rather than theory and is facilitated by experienced research degree supervisors. The key aims of the workshop are:

  • to consider key aspects of regulations relating to research degree supervision
  • to explore elements of good practice in supervision

Effective research degree supervision implies knowing what is required of oneself, of the candidate and of other parties (such as co-supervisors), understanding and clearly communicating expectations, acknowledging and responding to aspects of one's own and the candidate's behaviour, and hence developing productive working relationships over and above the business of the research itself.

Participants will explore these issues through short presentations, facilitated group discussions and case study exercises. Having completed this workshop, participants will:

  • be aware of a range of student and supervisory styles, and have considered their own style
  • know the expectations of the University and external stakeholders such as regulatory bodies and research funders
  • be able to identify the skills, knowledge, expectations and behaviours of their students
  • understand their own skills, knowledge and expectations for supervision
  • know about potential sources of further help and support
