Research Degree Supervision (II): Effective Working Relationships
This workshop builds on the first in the Research Supervision series, and concentrates specifically on working relationships with students, and interactions between supervisors and research degree students in meetings.
The session begins with a brief recap of issues covered in the first workshop on supervisory style and student response to supervision. Through a series of short sessions involving short presentations and facilitated small-group discussions, participants will then explore a range of specific issues relating to effective meetings: listening and thinking, offering effective feedback and helping students in planning.
The workshop will conclude with a wider-ranging discussion on the features of effective meetings, and a structured action-planning session.
Having completed this workshop, participants will:
- have identified ways of working with PGRs in effective and productive supervisory meetings and developing good working relationships
- have considered and developed important practices that contribute to effective meetings
- have considered the important factors in planning, and helping PGRs plan, research projects
- have identified approaches for giving and receiving feedback in supervisory relationships
- have developed their understanding of behavioural styles and the implications for the working relationship
