Research Degree Supervision (III): Maintaining Progress and Delivering Confirmation

This workshop builds on the previous workshops in the Research Supervision series. Attendance at the previous workshops is not a strict pre-requisite but is strongly recommended.

The session begins with a brief recap of the previous workshops in the series. The session then addresses the formal (regulatory) requirements of the Confirmation process and how these might be addressed in practice. Participants will explore issues relating to supervisory responsibility in guiding PGRs through confirmation, and related issues on time management and decision-making.

The formal aspects relating to the Confirmation process are specific to the PhD degree, however participants should also find the workshop content to be relevant for issues relating to mid-stage progression in other research degree programmes (professional or practitioner doctorates) for which the confirmation process does not exist.

Having completed this workshop, participants will:

  • be aware of University requirements for “transfer” (confirmation) of research degree registration, and how to guide PGRs through the process
  • have identified and considered relevant issues relating to time management, and have developed strategies for addressing these
  • have considered approaches to prioritisation and decision-making in managing research degree projects
  • have identified and addressed the principal challenges in delivering research degree confirmation
  • have further explored and developed skills relating to effective meetings
