External Members

Fees

External membership of the Library is free of charge to:

  • Visitors belonging to eligible institutions which are members of the SCONUL Access Scheme including OU students (SCONUL Membership card required - Reference only users will not be able to borrow books)
  • Research Park employees
  • Members of the University of Surrey Alumni Society (apply through the Alumni office: alumni@surrey.ac.uk)
  • Associated Institutions (conditions apply)

Paying External members

  • External membership is available for visitors to the University of Surrey

Payment for Individual or OU students can be made by cheque (payable to the University of Surrey), by cash, or by credit card.

Facilities

As an external member you may:

  • Borrow up to 4 books per card for 2 weeks (except from the Short Loan Collection, or 7 day loans)(excluding reference only users).
  • Use printed reference material, Journals 
  • Use photocopying facilities in the Library (credit may be added to Library cards when visiting the Library)
  • Request Inter Library Loans for books not held in the library for a non-refundable charge of £10.00 per item, payable in advance
  • Access online resources (while in the Library building) under specific terms and conditions for non-commercial use

 

Joining the Library

During Semester, library cards can be obtained from 09:00-20:00 on weekdays and 14:00-18:00 at weekends.
Out of Semester please check the opening hours, or phone the Ask Me Desk (01483-683325) for opening times.
If you are making a special journey, please phone ahead to check we can produce your card.

On joining the Library you will be issued with a Library card. Please look after this card.

All members are admitted to the Library on the understanding that they will abide by the Regulations for Users.

 

Your Library Card

You will need your Library card in order to

  • Enter the Library
  • Borrow material from the Library
  • Obtain your borrower PIN
  • Pay Library fines
  • Renew or reserve books
  • Make photocopies
  • Use the self service machines

Replacement cards

The Library will replace the card when you renew your membership of the Library. A new photograph will be taken.

Lost or stolen card

Cardholders whose library cards are stolen or lost must report this to the Library (01483 689235). There is a £12 charge for replacement cards, unless you can provide a Crime Report Number for a stolen card.

You will need to show ID (e.g. passport, driving licence, credit card) before a new card can be issued

Alterations

A replacement card will be issued at no charge for a change of name or title.
