Guide to Shelfmarks
The main collections of books can be found on Levels 4 and 5 of the Library.
Books in heavy demand are placed in the Short Loan Collection on Level 1. The Short Loan Collection contains 1 day loan books; 7 day loan books are shelved with the ordinary loan books on the upper levels.
Use the Library catalogue to find the exact shelfmark and location for each book. If you are searching for books on a particular topic, use a keyword search.
The main collection of books for Chemical Engineering has shelfmarks beginning 66.
Journals
Printed Journals
These are kept in the library. Search by the journal title on the Library Catalogue to find out where a journal is shelved. Some current issues are shelved on Level 1.
Electronic Journals
The ejournals@surrey portal links to the full-text electronic journals available from the University of Surrey. You can view the full-text articles on screen and save, email, print them, create alerts for searches etc. Collections of Science e-journals are available at these sites (follow links from the ejournals@surrey portal)
Electronic Books
You can use the Electronic Books page to access eBooks on Chemical and Process Engineering. The most useful collections for textbooks will be CRCnetBASE. Also relevant books are available via Safari Books online, Ebrary and Knovel.
For dictionaries try Credo Reference.
There are also links from some titles on the Library catalogue to electronic versions of the text - look for "e-link"

Online Bibliographical Databases
Online databases are the best way to search by topic for journal articles. Some databases will link to the full text of articles, others will only supply bibliographic details. Key databases for Chemical and Process Engineering are:
Engineering village provides access to Compendex, a major interdisciplinary engineering database including over 3 million abstracts from journals and conference proceedings.
SciFinder scholar This is a user-friendly online version of Chemical Abstracts (CA), which includes publication details and abstracts from over 8,000 periodicals, patents, conference proceedings, etc. SciFinder may be searched using words, research topics, names, formulae, processes, specific reactions, etc.
Web of knowledge is a provider of some major bibliographic databases including the Science Citation Index, contains references and cited references taken from a large number of leading international engineering journals. If your university has a subscription to the Web of Science you can access its databases using your university password - contact your library to check availability.
Zetoc This database contains details of approximately 20,000 current journals and 16,000 conference proceedings published per year. Through the Zetoc Alert current awareness service it is possible to receive by email the table of contents from particular journals or to receive details of articles that match some pre-defined search criteria. This is a subscription-only database.
Other Useful Library Resources
Newspapers
The Library takes certain daily British broadsheet newspapers. Recent copies are on Level 1 of the Library and older copies are kept on Level 2.
British newspapers and a huge variety of international papers can also be read electronically on Nexis.
Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985: The complete digital edition of The Times (London) capturing the entire newspaper, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.
Also of interest may be The Times (1910-1999) and The Sunday Times (1970-1999) which are held on microform on Level 2 of the Library.
Statistics
The Library's printed statistics collection is on Level 2. The collection includes statistics from the British Government and international organisations. There are two sequences in the statistics collection, books/monographs all with the shelfmark beginning 31 and also statistical periodicals shelved in A-Z order by title.

Some useful websites are:
National Statistics - The site for the UK's official statistics, it includes information on the economy, population, and society.
ESDS International This is a database only available by using your Athens username and password. ESDS International provides access to a range of datasets including macro data from OECD, IMF, World Bank and IEA.
Eurostat -The EU Statistical Office. It is possible to view structural, long, and short term indicators free of charge as well as the online version of Statistics in Focus which provides information on key statistical surveys.
EDC
The EDC collection is on Level 2 of the Library and contains a variety of materials produced by the Official Publications Office and other agencies and institutions of the EU
Standards and Patents
The Standards and Patents page tells you which sets of standards are available for use in the Library and on the web and where to find them. The University Library subscribes to the complete set of British Standards Online.
The library does not keep copies of patents. You can search for worldwide patents via the UK Patent Office web site but you cannot obtain the full text online. Once you have identified a patent you want, you can obtain a copy through the InterLibrary Loan service.

The Exam Papers Database offers past papers from 1998.

Chemical Abstracts is a key information resource which is not available to you online, but you will find articles, reports and patents indexed in here. It is kept in the Library on Level 2 in printed volumes.View online helpsheet.

Martindale's calculators online center: chemical engineering This site contains calculators, spreadsheets, applets, and additional material such as manuals and handbooks in all aspects of chemical engineering.
NIST chemistry WebBook prepared by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, this provides users with access to chemical and physical property data for chemical species through the Internet. Data provided are from collections maintained by the NIST Standard Reference Data Programme.
Engineering dictionary: chemical engineering part of the freely accessible GlobalSpec Engineering Search Engine, the definitions are provided by McGraw-Hill's Digital Engineering Library.

Ullmann's encyclopedia of industrial chemistry This is a subscription-only service published on the Wiley InterScience website. It is a major reference tool in chemical engineering.

Michigan chemical process dynamics and controls open textbook This is a student contributed open source text covering materials used at the University of Michigan in the senior level controls course.
Introductory chemical engineering thermodynamics This website is prepared as supplementary information to accompany the published textbook. This site provides an overview of the text, computer programs, links for students, links for instructors, and continuing education.

E-Learning Materials
Petrochemical processing From the Dow Gas Treating Products and Services website, these pages provide rich information on treatment of syngas streams, namely: syngas-CO2 removal; ammonia syngas-CO2 removal; and the pre-treatment of ethane.
MIT OpenCourseWare: chemical engineering The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA is the first university to provide free access to all of its course materials online for everyone to learn from. Courses in this section include "Numerical methods applied to chemical engineering". Individual course pages include a syllabus, lecture notes, assignments, links to related resources.
World lecture hall Maintained by the University of Texas at Austin, this site provides an entry point to free online course material from around the World. Browse or keyword search for chemical engineering material.
Higher Education Academy Engineering Subject Centre As part of the subject network of the Higher Education Academy, the Engineering Subject Centre delivers support for learning and teaching to the UK higher education engineering community.

Knovel An online technical reference collection used by scientists and engineers to quickly locate relevant and reliable technical information. Knovel is a subscription-based service that provides full access to nearly 2,000 key reference books.
ScienceDirect is a full text journal and book service from Elsevier covering a range of subjects, including Chemical Engineering. This is a subscription-based service.
Wiley InterScience is a full text journal and book service from Wiley with around two hundred Chemical Engineering related resources. This is a subscription-based service.
TechXtra is a searchable database of resources in engineering, mathematics and computing.
British standards online provides full text access to all British Standards and Eurocodes - requires a subscription.
Open Access Journals
OpenDOAR is a directory of worldwide institutional repositories.
DOAJ: Directory of open access journals Covers free, full text, quality-controlled scientific and scholarly journals. A substantial proportion of the journals are searchable at article level.
The open chemical engineering journal is a peer reviewed journal that aims to provide the most complete and reliable source of information on current developments in the field. The emphasis is on publishing quality articles rapidly.
Electronic journals for chemical engineering from the University of Delaware is an example of a compilation of key subject-specific journal information prepared by an institution of higher education. Access to the content of many of the journals listed will be dependent on institutional subscription.
Other Library Catalogues
COPAC is a union catalogue, giving free access to the merged online catalogues of many of the largest university research libraries in the UK and Ireland plus the British Library. It contains records of over 31 million library resources.
British Library catalogues on the web The British Library is the national library of the UK and receives a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland. Their catalogues list over 150 million items held in the collections - most of which can be ordered by inter-library loan from your local library.
Library of Congress is the United States equivalent.
Other libraries' Web catalogues A list of other library catalogues on the Internet, including the national libraries of other countries.
Internet Search Tools
Intute: engineering includes a Chemical Engineering section with around 600 resources which have been evaluated by subject experts in UK universities.
Chemindustry.com provides a wide range of chemical industry-related information, contacts, services and resources for the professional and the researcher.
Cheresources.com: chemical engineering tools and information offers a wide range of information for chemical engineers with free content including full text articles, technical newletters, message boards, and a directory of links. Subscribers have access to further articles, calculators, technical bulletins, etc.
AskaChE This resource guide site includes a list of links to websites and full-text articles covering chemical engineering in petroleum refining and gas plants. There is a glossary of technical terms as well as a help desk where chemical engineering questions are answered.

American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) The AIChE is a professional association that provides leadership in advancing the chemical engineering profession.
Chemical Industries Association The CIA is the UK's leading trade association for the chemical and the chemistry-using industries, representing members both nationally and internationally.
Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) The IChemE is the hub for the chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals worldwide.
Royal Academy of Engineering The RAE brings together the country's most eminent engineers in order to enhance engineering capabilities and to promote all areas of engineering as a profession.
Conferences & Events
Conferences and meetings on chemical engineering is part of Conference Service Mandl, a website that combines a free listing of current and up-coming conferences and seminars in science worldwide with a conference online management system that handles the administration of submission to conferences and attendance applications.
ExpoCentral.com: chemical engineering is a Web directory of events, products, services, trade shows and exhibitions in all subject areas.
Chemical week conferences provides a calendar of events relevant to chemistry and chemical engineering, with the added facility of being able to register online.
ZETOC: z-electronic table of contents is a searchable database of the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents. This includes around 20,000 current journals and around 16,000 conference proceedings published per year dating back to 1993, and is updated on a daily basis. It includes an email alerting service.

Chemical engineering world blogspot is the blog of the Chemical Engineering magazine which serves chemical engineering professionals in the chemical process industry.
JustEngineers Blog This is a blog for all engineering disciplines located on the JustEngineers website. Primarily designed for the job market, it also contains useful news and comments.

As with all wiki-based material, caution needs to be used, as much if not all of the material is not reviewed, or any peer review process is not mediated. This sort of material may be used for ideas for study or projects, but all information should be checked.

BBC is a key website full of information on all sorts of topics. Whatever your interests and information needs, this website has thousands of topics for you to explore.
The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian are examples of daily newspapers which have the majority of their content available for free online.
Factiva is one of the leading international newspaper databases, but requires a subscription - check with your library for access.

American Chemical Society
Information on, membership, conferences, education, and document delivery systems. Tables of Contents and an author index for all 25 ACS journals are also available free of charge on the server. Institution of Chemical Engineers
This web server includes contents pages of the most recent issues of IChemE periodicals, a diary of events, lists of IChemE publications, information on IChemE safety and environmental training packages, and general information on the organisation. The twenty-two special interest subject groups , many of which have their own pages, are linked from the home page.
Royal Society of Chemistry
Extensive information is available at this site about the Society, its membership, activities, and publications. A Conference diary lists forthcoming symposia, and there are links to many other chemistry sites.
Society of Chemical Industry
This site gives information about the Society, its Groups and Sections, plus details of meetings and publications, including its SCI Lecture Papers, its printed journals (Journal of Chemical Technology & Biotechnology; Journal of the Science of Food & Agriculture and Polymer International), and its books. The Society publishes Chemistry & Industry and Chemistry Today.
