 Guide to Shelfmarks

Music Scores, libretti, CDs and DVDs are held on Level 2 of the Learning Centre. AV resources are also held on Level 2.

To borrow CDs, DVDs and videos, take the items to the Self Issue machines on Level 1 or Level 2 and add them to your record. Then unlock the box using the box unlockers which are located on the Ground Level, Level 1 and Level 2.  Some Videos and DVD's are 1 day loans, some will also be Library Use Only.

The main collections of books can be found on Levels 4 and 5 of the Library.

Books in heavy demand are placed in the Short Loan Collection on Level 1. The Short Loan Collection contains 1 day loan books; 7 day loan books are shelved with the ordinary loan books on the upper levels.

Use the Library catalogue to find the exact shelfmark and location for each book. If you are searching for books on a particular topic, use a keyword search.

 Electronic Books

You can use the Electronic Books page to access eBooks on Theatre performance and production. The most useful collection will be netLibrary collection or the Ebrary collection.

There are also links from reading list titles on the Library catalogue to electronic versions of the text - look for "e-link"

 Online Bibliographical Databases

Online Databases are the best way to find out what journal articles etc have been published on a particular topic. Some databases will link to the full text of articles, others will only supply bibliographic details. Online databases important for Musical Theatre, Acting and Theatre Production are:

Arts & Humanities Citation Index  The Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database that provides access to the bibliographic information and cited references of all items published in more than 1,100 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals. 1975 onwards; no abstracts.

BFI Screenonline A British Film Institute resource with stills, video and audio clips, posters, biographies and analyses from the National Film and Television Archive, giving an account of British film and television from the early days to the present.

BoB (Box of Broadcasts) Archive of digital media recordings. Allows staff to record TV and radio broadcasts. Not available to users outside the United Kingdom.

BHI: British Humanities Index From 1962 onwards. BHI indexes over 320 humanities journals and weekly magazines published in the UK and other English speaking countries, as well as quality newspapers published in the UK.

Cambridge Companions to Literature and Classics A collection of reference works from Cambridge University Press. The subscription covers 175 titles in the Literature and Classics collection, as well as full text access to Shakespeare Survey, which has been published annually since 1948

Credo Reference Formerly Xreferplus. Search dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauri, quotations; with excellent cross-referencing across whole database.

FIAF - International Film Archive Database Available via the OvidSP platform, contains article citations from over 300 film-related periodicals with coverage from 1972 onwards. Divided into several databases - International Index to Film Periodicals, International Index to TV Periodicals, Treasures from the Film Archives, FIAF Affiliates Publications and Film/TV Documentation Collections.

IIPA Full Text: International Index to Performing Arts IIPA is a performing arts journal resource with over half a million indexed articles, plus detailed abstracts and full text from 1864 to the present, covering theatre, dance and film.

JSTOR Arts & Science Collections JSTOR is a collection of full text journals, most going back to Volume 1, Issue 1 (in some cases going back to the 18th or 19th Century). Many subjects are covered across the Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities. JSTOR operates a "moving wall" policy, which means that the most recent few years' volumes are not available.

LION (Literature Online) The full text of over 18,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 228 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

Nexis Provides full text access to UK national newspapers and regional newspapers. It also covers international news providers and company data.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The DNB is an illustrated collection of more than 50,000 specially written biographies of the men and women who shaped all aspects of Britain's past, from the fourth century BC to the year 2001.

Oxford English Dictionary The complete text of the OED's twenty-volume Second Edition and three-volume Additions Series

Project Muse Provides full-text access to over 300 humanities and social sciences journals from over 60 scholarly publishers.

Shakespeare Survey Full text access via Cambridge Companions Online, the Shakespeare Survey is a yearbook of Shakespeare studies and production published annually since 1948.

Film & Sound Online NB: To login, first click the "Login via UK Federation" button. Next choose "University of Surrey" from the dropdown list. You will then see the Athens login point. Downloadable films and videos for use in learning, teaching and research. Subjects include medicine, life science, archaeology, performing arts, music, history, social sciences. Note: Some campus PCs may not have software loaded to enable you to view these films.

Grove Music Online Incorporates the full text of "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians", "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera", and "The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz".

 

Other Useful Library Resources

Newspapers

The Library takes certain daily British broadsheet newspapers. Recent copies are on Level 1 the Library and older copies are kept on Level 2.

British newspapers and a huge variety of international papers can also be read electronically on Nexis.

Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985: The complete digital edition of The Times (London) capturing the entire newspaper, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.

Also of interest may be The Times (1910-1999) and The Sunday Times (1970-1999) which are held on microform on Level 2 of the Library.

The Stage

Current issues are available on Level 1 of the Library

Theatre Record

Reprints in full all the national drama critics' reviews of productions in and out of London, with full casts and credits. It carries early information on plans for shows all over the country. Available in print only in the journals section on Level 2 of the main library.

British Theatre Guide This site is devoted to all aspects of British theatre and includes experimental theatre as well as mainstream. It is a re-establishment of an earlier site 'About British Theatre' which closed in 2001. Users can subscribe to a free weekly email newsletter which, as well as providing updates on what is happening in theatre in the United Kingdom, gives updates on new features or stories on the website.

http://www.castalbumdb.com/ This database provides information about cast albums of stage musicals and recordings of film and TV musicals which were released on long-playing records and compact discs. A good place to search song titles or more obscure musicals

http://www.doollee.com/ Free online guide to modern playwrights and theatre plays that have been written, adapted or translated, into English since the production of Look Back in Anger in 1956.

The Guide to Musical Theatre A guide to musicals, including indexes and synopsis of musical shows and revues, rights holders, composers, cast recordings.

The Guide to World Drama An on-line guide to drama detailing the works of major dramatists complete with a brief synopsis of some of their published works.

Literature Resources: Theatre and Drama This is a page of annotated links to resources relevant for the study of theatre and drama worldwide.

Playregistry.com  A database of detailed information about plays and playwrights which provides synopses, biographies, character breakdowns, production histories and much more.  Conceived by Philip Simon an actor who graduated from Guildford School of Acting in 2001.
