Subject Resources

Reading Lists

The simplest and quickest way to find good quality academic reading relevant to your lectures and assignments is to search for the online reading list using your module code. This will link you directly to eBooks and articles in eJournals as well as trustworthy websites.  These lists can also be accessed via SurreyLearn.

Subject databases are online searchable collections providing access to a range of information including journal articles, newspapers and trade papers. Some databases will link to the full text of articles, others will only provide the reference.

Key databases for Environmental Science and Engineering are  Inspec, Scopus, Web of Science and Digimap.

Please speak to your Information Skills Librarian for advice about searching the databases.

SurreySearch allows you to search for books, articles, AV materials, databases, items in our archives and special collections and the research outputs of our academics and PhD students.

Journals and eJournals (electronic journals)

Journals and eJournals are available in print or online and are published frequently, i.e. monthly, quarterly. Journals can be peer reviewed: read by other experts in the field prior to publication. Use SurreySearch to find journal titles or articles. Print journals are available on Level 2.

eBooks (electronic books)

eBooks allow you to access textbooks online either in subject areas or larger collections.  Useful collections for Computing textbooks are SpringerLink, Wiley-Blackwell, Safari Books Online, Lecture Notes in Computer Science Ebrary and Knovel.  These can be found using SurreySearch.

Newspapers are available online using the Nexis database. A digital edition of The Times (London) from 1785-1985 is also available online via the subject databases.
