Using the Library

Improvements and Actions in Response to Feedback

We take every comment you make seriously - whether it's positive or negative, we want to know what you think and how we could do better. Here are some of the key things we've implemented as result of the feedback we've received:

Since last semester, your feedback has put the following issues high on our agenda. Take a look at what we’ve done about them:

"We need more computers"

You’ve said there aren’t enough computers in the library so now you can borrow one of 48 laptops from our self-service lockers.

All you need is your campus card – just follow instructions on the locker screen to borrow a laptop for use in the Library for up to 4 hours. The loan will appear on your Library account in the same way as a book.

To find out more about this service visit the FAQs page. If you have any comments about the service or suggestions for additional software please let us know by emailing or come and speak to a member of staff.

Don't forget you can also check live computer availability across campus, which can help you to choose the most appropriate place to study.

Study space

"More space please!"

We regularly receive feedback from you about the pressure on space in the Library and over the last couple of years have asked about your experience of using Library study spaces.

Your feedback has been clear – you need more study space, and for more of what we have to be silent or quiet.

This summer, we’re delighted to be given the opportunity to refurbish further areas of the original (older) Library buildings to provide more new and upgraded study spaces and new, modern shelving for collections.

Over the course of the summer vacation we will be:

  • Completely refurbishing large areas of Levels 4 and 5 to provide bright, modern study areas.
  • Providing additional silent and individual study areas that you tell us you want to see more of and updating and modernising our group study areas, with plenty of power and quality audio visual equipment.
  • Beginning the process of removing all the old, grey, narrow shelving and replacing with modern white shelving.

More information can be found on our Library News blog.

Library environment

Most of your concerns in this category were about cleanliness:

"Please can you clean the furniture more regularly, as it's always dirty"

Now that we are open 24 hours a day every day of the year, the Library is an extremely busy place on campus! We appreciate that this type of use takes its toll on furniture in the Library, which is why we have requested additional cleaning from our Housekeeping team on a regular basis. At busy times - such as during exams - we also have additional checks in place to ensure the Library environment is kept as pleasant as possible for you. During April 2017, we also plan to identify key areas in need of a deep clean.
