Abstract: The field of human circadian rhythms and sleep research has a longstanding tradition of mathematical modelling. Initially these modelling efforts were inspired by oscillator theory but more recent models are more directly based on physiology.
Surrey has been at the forefront of human circadian rhythms and sleep research for many years. Most of the efforts were focussed on data collection and hypothesis testing and not on biomathematical modelling. Several funding agencies are emphasizing the importance of data integration, multidisciplinarity and modelling. For research proposals to be successful in this area both data and modellers are required. We are currently collecting data on sleep, circadian rhythms and cognitions in two large scale multidisciplinary laboratory studies funded by the BBSRC and AFOSR-US. I will review these protocols, some of the published modelling efforts and modelling opportunities.
