Monday 22 December 2008
Research in Applied Mathematics in the UK during the period 2001-2007 was reviewed this year by a panel of experts. Surrey was ranked 5th equal in the UK for "World Leading" and "Internationally Excellent" Applied Mathematics.
Research activities were rated 4* (world leading), 3* (internationally excellent), 2* (recognized internationally) or 1* (recognized nationally), with a percentage assigned to each. The results for Applied Mathematics at the University of Surrey are:
| Quality Level: | 4* | 3* | 2* | 1* |
| Percentage: | 15 | 55 | 25 | 05 |
Thus 70% of the research in Applied Mathematics at Surrey was rated as either "world leading" or "internationally excellent". A ranking based on this metric puts Surrey 5th equal in the UK. Surrey is 12th equal in the Guardian's League Table, constructed using an average.
All eligible research staff in Applied Mathematics at the University of Surrey were included in RAE 2008.
This outcome is a reflection of the quality, originality and impact of mathematics research at Surrey and the strong support of the Faculty and University in promoting the discipline. Congratulations to academic staff, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, all of whom contributed to this accomplishment.
