MBA Modules
The Surrey MBA programme is a blend of professional development and academic modules.
The programme creates ethical, creative and entrepreneurial business leaders and managers with an international perspective. Full Time and part time Executive students study the same core subjects, with their delivery and assessment tailored for each programme.
Compulsory modules
Managing Human Resources
You must be able to critically evaluate management approaches and explore how these can be applied to best effect, so this module will provide - and build on - a basic understanding of drivers and constraints of human action within organisations.
We will provide an introduction to the major practices and policies used in the management of people, and encourage you to appraise these practices from a range of stakeholder and disciplinary perspectives. We will help you to become more aware of the significance of issues such as change, globalisation, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethics for the management of people.
On successful completion of this module, you will have increased your ability to;
- Identify and appreciate the practical implications of the assumptions underpinning approaches to human action in organisations
- Critically evaluate the theoretical robustness and practical use of different approaches to the management of people in organisations
- Demonstrate reasoned but flexible judgement in the use and development of relevant models and frameworks
- Demonstrate the ability to present complex, theoretically informed ideas in a clear and engaging way
- Work as a team member to resolve multi-dimensional problems
- Undertake secondary research into a relevant management problem
Marketing Management
Integrating theoretical concepts and models with practical application means you can measure the contribution marketing makes to business success. We will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of marketing management within an organisational setting.
The emphasis of the module is the management of marketing within contemporary settings. It looks at marketing philosophies, context, strategies, operations, structures, systems, techniques and tactics, and all customer-facing functions. You will cover key concepts and issues such as environmental factors, consumer behaviour, marketing planning, segmentation, targeting and positioning, new technology, services marketing, ethics, and the marketing mix.
The module will help you develop the tools to deal with marketing contexts and philosophies, consumer behaviour, marketing research, approaches to planning and positioning, product and branding strategies, pricing strategies, marketing communications, distribution, services, and relationship marketing.
On successful completion of this module, you will have increased your ability to;
- Recognise the scope and character of marketing within increasingly dynamic market contexts
- Understand and evaluate the various approaches to marketing management
- Apply strategic and tactical marketing management concepts and methods
- Identify social and ethical issues relating to marketing policies, procedures and practices
- Critically evaluate the application of planning tools for marketing and market research
- Manipulate various marketing philosophies, approaches and designs
Operations Strategies
While the Surrey MBA will help you to master the day-to-day skills and issues involved in running a business, every organisation needs to keep an eye on the bigger picture.
Building on theoretical understanding and practical exploration of operations strategy, this module demonstrates how strategic operations management enhances corporate planning.
You will systematically develop a framework for understanding strategic operations management within the context of a firm’s corporate strategy. You will examine the key components of these strategies, and thus develop an understanding of the operations management functions.
Financial Management
Understanding and analysing published financial accounts is a key managerial skill. Honing this ability will improve your critical evaluation of actual business performance in any given situation.
By looking at the conceptual foundations for understanding, analysing and interpreting financial information, we will help you build your ability to think across management disciplines and to appreciate the fiscal significance and implications of business decisions.
The module will enhance your confidence when looking at the financial environment, corporate governance, accounting standards, accounting principles and company reporting, analysis of the prime financial statements, basic cost management, principles of budgeting,capital-budget decision making, working capital management, sources and cost of finance, and cost of capital.
On successful completion of this module, you will have increased your ability to;
- Understand financial statements, their content and purpose, their interpretation and their limitations, with increased awareness of the legal and accounting constraints in their production
- Use an organisation’s corporate reporting to evaluate its current performance and its future sustainability
- Understand and apply the principles of budgeting and planning, and use the cost concepts required for decision making
- Comprehend the theoretical basis of investment appraisal techniques and evaluation of the risks involved, and use valuation skills and metrics in capital budgeting
- Identify the sources of finance of a business or other organisation, and recognise the key relationships between debt and equity
- Evaluate the different capital structure options available to a business
- Understand working capital requirements in companies
The module will also give you practice with transferable skills such as;
- Internet-based and electronic library research skills
- Computing skills (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Project)
- Presentation skills
Strategic Management in a Global Context
Understanding the competitive market forces at play in the economy is only part of strategic management in a global context. You need to master, through theory and practice, the knack of formulating corporate strategy to embrace global environmental challenges, conditions and capabilities.
In this module, we will help you improve your ability to evaluate theoretical frameworks, and guide you to enhanced practical understanding of how corporate strategy can be formulated in the light of global environmental challenges and internal conditions and capabilities.
Optional modules
Project and Programme Management
Focusing upon project and portfolio management, with a focus on collaborative projects, this modules aims to equip students with the ability to plan and manage a small to medium-sized multi-partner project to successful conclusion. On completion of the module, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills of project management for strategic and operational problem-solving.
Entrepreneurship
The objectives of this module are to evaluate the various theories of entrepreneurship, analyse the economic and social role of entrepreneurship, analyse factors affecting the development of entrepreneurship in society, critically assess and explore the process involved in developing entrepreneurial capability and in creating an entrepreneurial venture.
Financial Strategy
This module aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of financial strategy. It develops in-depth understanding of corporate finance theories and practical awareness of how these are applied in the real world.
Strategic Change Management
This module is intended to provide an understanding of the concept of strategic change management. In particular, it adopts a multidisciplinary approach to managing organisational development and change.
Sustainability Management Strategies
This module examines the place of sustainability in modern business. Taking a holistic view, it analyses sustainability as a business paradigm and examines how concern for the environment and broader economic and social sustainability agendas can be implemented by organisations, strategically and operationally, within local contexts.
Employment and Labour Law
This module introduces the legal principles affecting the employment relationship. Aimed at providing an understanding of the interaction between the law, employment and labour relations, the module focuses on contractual aspects of employment and the effects of statutory duties imposed on parties. It aims to engender an appreciation of the intricacies of employer/employee relations.
Students choose three modules. This list is indicative and depends on students choices so not all modules will run every year.
Professional development workshops
A programme of workshops developing professional and personal skills such as negotiation, intuitive management, conflict resolution, intercultural awareness, change management and diplomacy.
Business simulation project
Through a sophisticated computer simulation students build and run a business over a set time period.
Action case consultancy
Small teams are assigned to public, private or voluntary organisations and apply their problem solving and consultancy skills to analysing complex real life problems. The project includes preparing and presenting a consultancy report to the client organisation.
Overseas study tours
You will have the option to study elective modules at Reims Management School (RMS) in France. Accredited by EQUIS, AMBA and AASCB, RMS is one of the top ten Management Schools in France and in the top 30 in Europe.
Guest lectures and business visits
Throughout the Surrey MBA programme leading academics and guest speakers from industry join us to deliver lectures and seminars. There are also a number of visits to businesses and industry organisations allowing you to see theory being put into practice.
The Surrey MBA Summer School
Held each July the Surrey MBA summer school focuses on a topical issue from the business world. The summer school runs for a week and brings together, current students and alumni along with guest speakers from industry and leading academics. Dissertation – Individual business research project
A 14,000 word dissertation that applies the learning from the Surrey MBA to the analysis of a complex business issue. Students use concepts, theories and models and conduct their own research to produce this final work.
