Surrey students raise £5,000 at Three Peaks Challenge

Friday 30 May 2008

A group of University of Surrey students recently undertook the Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. The challenge combined the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, which collectively is a height of 3,407 metres. The team completed all three summits in just less than 36 hours.

The Three Peaks Challenge has grown in popularity year on year, and challengers of all ages equip themselves with a necessary mix of good stamina and fitness levels twinned with walking experiences to overcome mental and physical obstacles. The students raised £5,000 and gave 20% to local mountain rescue teams and 80% to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Bob Anderson, the Director of the Students’ Union, was the team mentor. He helped with ensuring the overall success of the challenge with Surrey student Kavita Sidapra.

Kavita comments: "At the beginning I volunteered to be a Core Social Entrepreneur to organise the National Three Peaks Challenge. It seemed like a straight forward event that required a bit of organising and determination. As I continued to work through the preparation of the event with the team, I realised what a mammoth challenge it really was! However, organising and conducting all operations around the challenge has been a hugely enjoyable task."

The Three Peaks Challenge is part of the Students’ Union Evolution Scheme that also saw the huge success of over 1,600 participants at ‘The Guildford Mile’ for Sports Relief earlier this year.
