Surrey welcomes State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Hungary

Wednesday 1 October 2008

The State Secretary of Hungary’s Ministry of Culture and Education, Dr Katalin Bogyay, recently visited the University of Surrey to discuss possible future co-operation between Hungary and the University.

Dr Bogyay, who was accompanied by the Head of the department of International Relations Ms Erika Vaczko and the State Secretary’s Executive Administrator Ms Gabriella Csatari, met with various senior members of the University staff including the Dean of International Relations, Professor Colin Grant and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, Professor Nick Emler.

The visit, which was arranged by Professor Peter Barta, Chair in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, himself a Hungarian national, saw Dr Bogyay discuss potential future co-operation with Professor Marion Wynne-Davies of the University’s recently founded Department of English.

Dr Bogyay commented on the importance of international links in education: "Students and academics that are able to study and work abroad are themselves bridges between Hungary and the rest of the world."

Dr Bogyay stressed the high quality of work undertaken by universities in both Hungary and the UK and the importance of building strong relationships between the two countries: "We want to create direct relations with direct Educational Institutions and to run direct programmes to benefit all."

Professor Wynne-Davies comments: "The Department of English is delighted to have forged such strong and propitious links with Hungary and looks forward to the arrival of the first PhD scholars in 2009."
