NPL - University of Surrey Strategic Partnership Launch Event
Tuesday 26 August 2008
Following the signing in 2006 of Memorandum of Understanding that aspired to develop closer ties between the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Surrey, a strategic partnership has now been formed in order to build collaborative research and training in areas of mutual interest and benefit.
This partnership will be launched officially on Wednesday, September 3 at the University of Surrey with a programme of workshops and public lectures during which winners of three jointly-funded full-PhD research studentship projects won in an internal competition will be announced.
The workshops will be held in the Lecture Theatre Block on the Guildford campus and will run from 12.45 p.m. until 5.00 p.m. The workshops will concentrate on some of the areas in which NPL and the University will work closely together, namely: Satellites, Communications and Signal Processing; Nano-Engineering and Metrology; and Applied Radiation.
The workshops will be followed by a series of public lectures to be held in the School of Management from 6.00 p.m. Following a welcome address by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, Professor Christopher Snowden there will be short presentations of the winning PhD projects (in the areas of: Design and Measurement Methodologies of Low Cost Small Antennas; Development of a Microbolometer for Microdosimetry of Ionisation Radiation; and Scaffold Characterisation and Fabrication for Tissue Engineering Vascular Grafts.) and a keynote address by guest speaker, Professor John Pethica, Chief Scientist at NPL.
