Viral Therapy of Cancer

Tuesday 20 May 2008

In the last decade there has been an explosion of interest in using viruses as treatments for cancer. This has been as a result of increased understanding on the molecular basis of cancer, and how some of the cancer-associated cell processes can be targeted by naturally occurring or genetically manipulated viruses. From early prototype gene therapy models, certain viruses are undergoing formal evaluation in clinical trials, both as single agents and in combination with standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some of these trials are ongoing at the University of Surrey.

This book has been edited by researchers active in laboratory and clinical trials involving viral agents: Professor Hardev Pandha from the University of Surrey PGMS together with Dr Kevin Harrington from the Royal Marsden Hospital London and Professor Richard Vile from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. There are contributions from authors from leading centres worldwide, each focusing on specific agents for a range of cancers. Chapters coherently present the advances made with individual agents and review the biological and clinical background to a range of viral therapies: structured to proceed from basic science at the bench to the patient’s bedside, they give an up-to-date and realistic evaluation of a therapy’s potential utility for the cancer patient.

Viral Therapy of Cancer is essential reading for both basic scientists and clinicians with an interest in viral therapy and gene therapy.
