Surrey High Sheriff praises good work of UniSPORT
Thursday 15 May 2008
Sally Varah, the new High Sheriff of Surrey, recently visited UniSPORT at the University of Surrey.
The High Sheriff, who took over the role in April, has chosen promoting sport among young people as one of her themes for the year. It is her aim to encourage more young people to engage in sports activities, to build self-esteem and lead healthy lives.
UniSPORT staff showed the High Sheriff the facilities at the sports centre. She was introduced to children involved in sports activities including trampolining, climbing and cheerleading. The children, who have a range of physical and learning difficulties and cannot easily get involved sport elsewhere, are able to use the facilities, assisted by a variety of volunteers made up of university students, staff and others from the wider community.
The High Sheriff comments: "If this is what the university can offer now, it is exciting to think what opportunities will be available once the Surrey Centre for Sport is built on campus."
UniSPORT is the sport and recreation department at the University of Surrey. It is open to all students and staff at the University as well as the local community in Guildford. The department is operated from two main sites, the Sports Centre (Stag Hill) and the Varsity Centre (Manor Park) offering a huge variety of sports, dance and exercise opportunities.
